- Lower & Upper School | 2nd Nature Academy
SNA is home to the Lower School (kindergarten and elementary grades) and the Upper School (middle school and high school). It is our belief that all learners thrive in an environment where they are encouraged to inquire and explore. LOWER SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN Kindergarten at SNA is rooted in inquiry and problem based learning. Skills based, integrated and multi-sensory, emphasis is placed on social-emotional wellness and the development of strong interpersonal skills. Kindergarten at 2nd Nature Academy is a skills based program that relies heavily on the importance of play to teach interpersonal skills and conflict resolution. This program is designed to prepare students for first grade by providing important pre reading and pre writing skills throughout the school year. Many students will begin reading and writing by the end of kindergarten but it is not a requirement to advance to first grade. The kindergarten program at 2nd Nature Academy is designed to fill the tool box for each child with necessary skills for when they are developmentally ready to begin reading and writing. Students must be 5 by September 30th to be eligible for 2nd Nature Academy kindergarten. For students who do not meet the minimum age requirement or could use an extra year for social-emotional or academic readiness, we recommend our interim-kindergarten program . ELEMENTARY GRADES 1-5 Lower Elementary curriculum focuses on social-emotional wellness, interpersonal skills, and conflict resolution Similar to all programs, our elementary program (grades 1-5) is deeply rooted in inquiry and problem-based learning. It is skills based, integrated and multi-sensory. In addition, there is strong emphasis placed on cooperative learning, community outreach, and environmental awareness and responsibility. As with every grade level, critical thinking skills that are age and developmentally appropriate are developed within the classroom. The elementary program is designed to serve as the framework for specific content taught, which may also be influenced by student and teacher interest, school wide activities and current events. UPPER SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADES 6-8 Students in middle school benefit from being in an environment that includes mentor relationships with teachers, small class sizes, individualized instruction and attention, and a flexible curriculum that allows for active and personalized learning. Middle school is a unique period in a student’s academic career. The middle school years are marked by distinct physiological and emotional growth. Similar to all programs, our middle school program (grades 6-8) at SNA is deeply rooted in inquiry and problem-based learning, with skills-based, integrated, and multi-sensory curriculum. The middle school program emphasizes the importance of social-emotional wellness, interpersonal skills, and conflict resolution. In addition, teachers intentionally and deliberately incorporate cooperative learning, community outreach, and environmental awareness and responsibility where appropriate. As with every grade level, critical thinking skills that are age and developmentally appropriate are developed within the classroom. Middle school course curriculum is designed to serve as the framework for specific content taught, which may also be influenced by student and teacher interest, schoolwide activities, and current events. There is heavy emphasis on developing independence and strengthening executive functioning skills. HIGH SCHOOL GRADES 9-12 The high school program at SNA fosters independence, responsibility and strengthening executive functioning skills in a safe and supportive environment. Course offerings are structured to meet and exceed college admissions requirements, as well as prepare students for higher education, diverse career paths, and to positively contribute to society. The high school program operates on both an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary model, and is heavily rooted in both inquiry and problem-based learning. An interdisciplinary approach teaches concepts and skills from two or more disciplines that are tightly linked so as to deepen knowledge and skills. A transdisciplinary approach requires students to undertake real world problems and projects, and apply skills and knowledge from two or more disciplines. This allows for a more authentic and purposeful learning experience, challenging the efficacy of traditional teaching methods and engaging students in real world problem-solving and experiential learning. Student-centered learning and autonomy support increased motivation, improved decision-making abilities, and enhanced critical and creative thinking capacities. The high school years are a unique period of social emotional development, rooted in identity and independence. High School Highlights

Read what families, students, and alumnus have to say about a 2nd Nature Academy education. Testimonials NICHOLE ANDREW Parent If you are looking for a small school atmosphere with a truly unique learning experience where students are encouraged to explore, inquire, collaborate, create, analyze, and solve relevant problems through their experiential learning approach, then we highly recommend 2nd Nature Academy! LEAH DONAHUE Parent [2nd Nature Academy] has fostered an incredible sense of individualism, acceptance, creative thinking, critical thinking, project-based learning, kindness—the list goes on. [My daughter] wakes up excited to go to school, and the staff and teachers truly and genuinely care for [her]. I feel she couldn't be better supported or positioned for a successful future. DEREK BOBBIT Alumnus Their advanced classes gave me a boost for the complex math [and science] that I am currently learning. I also find projects are easier for me to manage [because of my experience at 2nd Nature Academy] and the curriculum helped me gain merit badges for the Boy Scouts. 2nd Nature Academy gave me the foundation I needed to make it to where I am today. LAUREN & RICK HAJJAR Parents In addition to a strong academic focus, our children are learning the competencies needed for future success such as empathy, self and group awareness, financial management and communication skills. [...] Most importantly, they are happy at 2nd Nature Academy. They feel respected, heard and understood within this school community. At the end of the day, that is our measure of success! ELIZABETH CUNNINGHAM Parent Kids develop critical thinking skills and solve their own interpersonal conflicts with support and guidance from the staff. They learn the importance of respect, communication and working as a team. As we teach and reinforce these same values at home, I can see these skills emerging in my 7-year old son; and as a result I see increased self-confidence and greater independence.

FAQ 01 All-Day Outdoor Experience Camp Lovewell is a total outdoor adventure experience that requires daily movement across campus. Camp activities happen in all kinds of weather and will be modified during threatening weather (thunderstorms or extreme heat). In these cases, we utilize one of the SNA school buildings. In mild, rainy weather, we will continue to be outside or in the camp barn/tent. It is very important that campers bring raincoats and boots on rainy days. The camp barn is fully shaded and used for down time and restful activities, arts & crafts, card games, and lunch breaks, as well. We have a water refill station in the camp barn as well and counselors do a great job of ensuring campers are remaining hydrated. Not the vibe for your camper? Check out our indoor/outdoor Brainwave STEAM Camps (STEM + Arts) >> 02 Daily Packing List Get your own printable copy of our handy-dandy daily checklist by clicking on the button below: Packing List 03 Dress Code Camp is a time to spend indoors and outdoors, physically engaged, and with your friends. It is all about creativity, and can be messy and dirty. Therefore, it is important that each camper is dressed appropriately, safely, and packed in preparation for a day of adventure. The following tenets apply: Apparel must be comfortable and rugged, and campers should expect that their clothes may become soiled or torn due to the nature of camp activities. All clothing must be camp appropriate. Depictions of violence, weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, inappropriate innuendos, and sexually explicit content are not allowed. Vulgar, sexual, offensive, hateful, racist, divisive, and/or exclusionary language will not be permitted. Clothing, jewelry, and accessories must not pose hazards, must be well-fitting, and must not restrict physical activity and exploration. Aside from swimwear, undergarments and midriffs must be covered at all times. Excessively revealing clothing is not acceptable. Clothing must support a range of motion throughout all camp activities. Appropriate footwear is required. This includes shoes that fasten securely for walking, hiking, and climbing, that are closed-toe and closed-heel. 04 Drop-off/Pick-up Our standard camp day begins at 9:00 am and concludes at 4:00 pm. For campers enrolled in before and/or after care, details & drop-off/pick-up locations may vary. Drop Off Basics Campers must be dropped off and picked up at our check-in tent, located on the far side of the 2nd Nature Academy (SNA) parking lot. During carpool, parents/guardians must: not enter the camp grounds. follow all signs directing traffic and limiting access to restricted areas. not park in the carpool line. not get out of their cars while in the carpool line. not leave a car unattended in the carpool line. Pick Up Basics At pick up, the camper will be escorted to the car and signed out. We may ask for ID on the first day or two until we are familiar with faces. Please have your ID ready to pick up. If anyone on your approved pickup list is picking up your camper, please be sure that they also have their ID ready. We would like the flow of pick-up to go as quickly and smoothly as possible. Please be patient. It will take a few minutes to move the carpool line along. Additional information may be found in our handbook, which will be made available to you upon registration and includes information on: absences, early dismissals, late arrivals, & available accommodations when adequate notice is provided general traffic rules & safety a carpool map 05 Early Dismissals/Late Arrivals We strongly discourage early dismissal requests and late drop-offs. An early dismissal/late arrival camper is subject to miss one or many activities in their camp day or be late for their requested early pick-up time. Campus security and ratio protocols affect early dismissals/late arrivals and require advance planning to accommodate. Our campus is expansive and activities occur both across campus and the Dunstable Rural Land Trust. Depending on which program they are enrolled in, a camper may be in the pool, in the woods, or at the pond. Moreover, ACA requires that no counselor may be alone with a camper and therefore, extra staffing is necessitated to transport single campers across campus. Additional information is provided in our handbook. 06 Location & Contact Camp Lovewell is a summer day camp program operated by 2nd Nature Academy, LLC. 2nd Nature Academy (SNA) campus sits on the former site of an 18th century dairy farm. Consisting of 39 acres of pristine land in south Nashua, NH and Dunstable, MA, the grounds also abut roughly 700 acres of conserved and protected land in both municipalities. With fields, forests, ponds, wetlands, and a working farm, our grounds are the perfect place to learn, explore, and play. About the Campus Directions & Contact 07 Lunches, Snacks & Allergies All lunches and snacks are to be provided by the campers. Microwaves and refrigeration are not available; please pack accordingly. A reusable ice pack is recommended. No glass bottles, candy, or soda. Food Allergies/Intolerances If a camper has a food allergy or food intolerance, it is the parent/guardian’s duty to inform the camp administration of any such conditions. Precautions, treatment, and an emergency plan must be included in a written document from the camper’s physician prior to the camper’s first day of camp. We will make all reasonable attempts to keep the camper safe. Campers will be instructed to sit at the allergen-free area to avoid cross contamination. Campers are expected to wash their hands and face after eating lunch, and the staff sanitizes tables after meals and snacks. Additional protocols apply for epi-pens. 08 Refund/Reduction Policy There is no refund or reduction once a child is registered and/or paid for, in any amount. It is the responsibility of the Registrant, not the Camp, to ensure that there is no scheduling conflict, nor is the Camp responsible for any conflicts that may arise after registration and/or payment. Please ensure you consider possible conflicts caused by school, summer school, other summer programs, vacations, life events, etc. prior to registering your camper. Medical Exemptions We do understand that occasional medical emergencies occur that are outside of everyone’s control. Relevant and appropriate medical exemptions to our Refund Policy will be considered at the discretion of the Camp, provided that: the emergency necessitates a camper missing an entire week of camp, camp-requested documentation is furnished by a licensed medical provider, and the exemption is approved by the administration upon review . No medical exemption is guaranteed. Prorated Weeks & Absences As staffing must occur on a weekly, if not a seasonal basis, we are unable to offer prorated camp prices, regardless of number of days in attendance. All weeks are priced at the same, seasonal flat rate for each corresponding age group. Moreover, no refunds are made for days that a camper is absent, regardless of reason . 09 Registration Process Registration portal access will be provided when registration becomes active each season. How to Set up a Household 10 Water Safety General Policies Swimming and kayaking are done under the supervision of a certified lifeguard. Pond swimming and kayaking are conducted depending on weather and climate conditions. No camper will be permitted in a kayak or swim in the pond without a properly fitting regulation style personal floatation device (PFD). Kayaking is offered to campers who are 6 years and older. Swimmers wearing any floatation device will NOT be allowed to swim in the deep section of the pool or pond. Daily recreational free swim is in a pool with a certified lifeguard and watchers on deck at all times. All campers will be tested at the start of each camp session for their ability level. The certified lifeguard on duty and staff will determine if a camper is permitted to swim in the deep section of the pool, as well as whether or not a camper needs a PFD to use the pool. This is at the sole discretion of the certified lifeguard on duty . All campers will understand pool rules completely before entering the pool area, including buddy checks and pool evacuation procedures. In the event of inclement or cold weather, swimming and/or boating may be canceled. The amount of swim time will vary week to week depending on the number of campers in attendance. If the camper is not a proficient swimmer, parents/guardians must provide their child with a US Coast Guard certified life vest. Camp Lovewell does not supply life vests for campers to swim in the pool. Children who do not have a life vest and who do not pass the swim test will not be allowed in the pool. Additional protocols are outlined in full in our handbook. Have a different question? Email us! Top of Page Activities Accreditation Dates & Hours Tees Gallery FAQ

American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. Students at SNA will be offered the option of taking the following courses for AP credit; grade point averages will be weighted accordingly. Course content will be delivered using a variety of methods that adhere to our SNA educational philosophy. A.P. Capstone™ Overview AP Capstone™ is a diploma program based on two year long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. These courses are designed to complement other AP courses that the AP Capstone student may take. Instead of teaching specific subject knowledge, AP Seminar and AP Research use an interdisciplinary approach to develop the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills students need for college-level work. AP Seminar AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments. AP Research AP Research, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense. (Note: AP Seminar is a prerequisite for AP Research. Completing AP Seminar and all its required assessment components is necessary for students to develop the skills to be successful in AP Research.) 2023 AP RESEARCH PRESENTATION & ORAL DEFENSE In AP Research, year two of the AP Capstone Program, "students are required to design, plan, and implement a yearlong, in-depth study or investigation in an area of personal interest through a chosen or designed inquiry method and develop a well-reasoned argument based on the evidence collected in an academic paper of 4,000-5,000 words. As a culmination of their research, students deliver (using appropriate media) a presentation and orally defend their research design, approach, and findings (AP Research Course and Exam Description)." On Friday, April 28, 2023, AP Research students presented to a panel composed of members of our school community: Rocio Rosales, PhD, Jose Martinez, MS, and Michael Varraso, Esq. Students and panelists engaged in an oral defense session, as well as a more casual question and answer session following the performance tasks. We would like to say a special thank you to our panelists for their time and enthusiasm, as well to Rambling House Food & Gathering for their generosity in providing their space and refreshments for this student milestone. With abundant open air classroom spaces, multiple fields, expansive forests, an educational animal barn, school vegetable gardens, freshwater ponds, glacial eskers, rolling hills, and seasonal wetlands and bogs, there is adequate space for all classes to participate in meaningful outdoor educational experiences throughout the day. Current COVID-19 health considerations include: Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting using EPA-approved cleaners and sanitizers Frequent hand-washing for all ages Frequent use of outdoor spaces, including outdoor classrooms Classroom windows open whenever possible Heat recovery ventilation system in all buildings Strict adherence to sick policies While COVID-19 vaccination is not required to enroll in our programs, we do require children to receive the immunizations required by New Hampshire state law and regulation for attendance at public schools.
