The race for the 2nd Nature Academy student government presidency took place this month, with presidential and vice presidential candidates Angus Granahan and Mackenzie Wilkins and Ainsley White and Rachael Hanlon campaigning to become the 2025-2026 school president and vice president.
A November 10th survey sent out to middle and high school students gauged which community issues students wanted the future president and vice president to address, as well as which two candidates they were leaning towards. A majority of people cited the reason for their decision as their knowledge of who the candidates were (84%), followed by the candidates’ charisma (52%). Additionally, the most common issues the student body wished to see addressed was the enhancement of school spirit (72%), a higher frequency of certain events (68%), and stronger leadership (60%).

In addition, interviews of both candidates were conducted to ascertain their positions on certain issues and why they thought they would make the best president and vice president. When asked how they hoped to make SNA better and what made them the best candidates, Gus and Mackenzie focused on the fact that they would put themselves first and would make sacrifices in order to better our community, citing specific goals such as planning more schoolwide field trips to connect lower and upper school students and assisting in starting up the library to create a shared community space. Ainsley and Rachael discussed their long tenure and impact within the SNA community and student government, saying that it makes them the most experienced and qualified for the job while also mentioning their goals of more schoolwide field trips and strengthening the bonds between the lower and upper grades.
Furthermore, each candidate was asked their favorite type of soup. The results are as follows: Gus stated clam chowder, Mackenzie and Ainsley, chicken noodle soup, and Rachael declared minestrone.
After each candidate ran their campaigns and gave speeches to the whole school on Wednesday, November 19th, students and teachers prepared to cast their vote on Friday, November 21st. It proved to be a very close race, as by a margin of just 8 votes, Gus and Mackenzie won the presidency over Rachael and Ainsley.
